Motto: "Symbiosis of 21st centrury patient care, research and education"
The Department of Rheumatology at the University of Debrecen Medical Center (UDMC) was founded in 2001. The Department has been playing a central role in arthritis care, rheumatology graduate and postgraduate education and arthritis research. We are also the regional center for organizing rheumatology care, education and research.
The rheumatology team includes 6 rheumatology, immunology and internal medicine specialists, a number of rheumatology residents, secretary, head nurse, nurses, assistants, physiatrists and an independent clinical study team.
Inpatient care has been carried out on 20 specialized beds in 2-4-bed wards. In addition, we also have two single-bed wards with bathroom, internet access, TV set, refrigerator and personaliyed menu option. We hospitalize around 1,000-1,300 inpatients per year with a mean duration of 5-6 days. Outpatient care includes early arthritis and emergency care every day, as well as follow-up care 6 hours daily. Our outpatient clinics see 6-7,000 patients per year. Our physiotherapy unit includes exercise conducted by an expert physiatrist, as well as electrotherapy, ultrasound, laser, magnetotherapy, Bioptron polarized light therapy and many others. The vicinity of the Aquaticum Thermal Spa gives us the opportunity to offer balneotherapy (thermal water and mud therapy) and wellness-spa therapy to our out- and inpatients. Apart from patients covered by local insurances, we offer paid rheumatology care for foreign and Hungarian patients with no waiting list and top-quality service. Our department is a Regional Arthritis and Biological Therapy Center, with top-quality diagnostics and treatment options. We can offer all treatments available all around the world!!! We are very proud of our Biosphera infusion center where our dedicated and highly trained nurses perform infusion therapy in cosy massage chairs. Biosphera is equipped with music instruments, plasma TV and luxurious setting. Recently, we introduced local arthritis treatment using radioisotopes injected into the joints called radiosynoviorthesis (RSO).

Our major interests in patient care, research and education are arthritides (inflammatory rheumatic diseases) and autoimmune, connective tissue disorders. As some of our colleagues are specialized in medicine and clinical immunology, in addition to rheumatology, that supports our expertise in the diagnostics and treatment of these conditions. We believe in multilevel, progressive patient care. Thus, we primarily treat patients with these spacialized diseases. However, our outpatient clinics accept patients with any musculoskeletal conditions.

Our mission statement is the symbiosis of modern, high-quality patient care, research and education. Therefore, apart from treating arthritis and autoimmune patients, we also perform internationally reknown research in the same area that resulted in almost 300 scientific articles, 8 books and 60 book chapters. We also educate our students, our other colleagues and, primarily, our patients in order to better understand these diseases. Our Arthritis Foundation and our Arthritis Patients' Club are in service for our mission.
